The small copper box was found last Friday at a downtown Novato construction site and opened by an Oakland artwork preservationist.
The box had been buried in concrete beneath a Presbyterian church that in 1962 became Novato's first city hall.
The box contained a very wet but legible bible and some badly deteriorated newspapers.
