The victim, Concord resident Sergio Pereda, was walking on the sidewalk on Fry Way between Willow Pass and Clayton roads with a friend at about 9 p.m. when he had a brief verbal exchange with someone in a car.
Someone in the car then shot Pereda. The car was last seen traveling west on Clayton Road, police said.
Pereda was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooter was described as a Hispanic, Asian or Filipino man between 20 and 25 years old with "chubby" cheeks and dark brown eyes. He was wearing a black beanie cap and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt at the time of the shooting. He may speak Spanish but not fluently, police said.
The vehicle was described as a 2000 to 2005 two-door BMW 325 or similar-looking car. The car was metallic steel blue and possibly a convertible with a black top. It may also have had after-market chrome wheels with gold-colored center caps.
