The repair work is part of a repaving project on two stretches of the bridge deck showing serious signs of deterioration, Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus said.
Crews began work Monday night grinding about three inches of concrete on the bridge deck and continued with the remaining concrete work on Tuesday night, Haus said.
Two of three westbound lanes were shut down for nearly four hours Tuesday afternoon to allow for emergency repairs. Crews were forced to remove cold mix asphalt that didn't hold and hot mix asphalt was used as an alternative. Haus said crews also applied polyester concrete on the western end where the grinding was conducted.
Lanes on the bridge between Alameda and San Mateo counties will be closed alternately through the night until 5 a.m. over the next few days, Haus said. Work on the westbound lanes is scheduled to be completed tonight and the eastbound lanes will be completed Thursday night.
