Mayoral candidates announce plans

Democrat candidate Keith Wilkowski today announced his plan to expand a program that keeps senior citizens safe. Wilkowski wants to expand RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol program in which police and the Area Office on Aging work together to protect older adults.

Wilkowski suggests using Toledo's eight major senior centers as home bases. He estimates it would cost around $43,000 per center, but says total benefits would be more than $260,000.

Meanwhile, Republican mayoral candidate Jim Moody is calling to save the South Toledo YMCA. "If the reason this facility is being shut down is for monetary reasons, I call upon our county commissioners to direct more of their state and federally funded child care programs to this location to boost cash flow."

You may remember, we first told you a few weeks ago the Y plans to close its child development center at St. V's and its south Toledo location.

Besides Moody and Wilkowski, Democrat Ben Konop and independents Mike Collins and Mike Bell are widely considered the "major" candidates in the race for Toledo mayor.
