Gary Fernandez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury.
The stabbing happened at about 3 p.m. at Hair Pro solon at 1800 Monument Blvd. Three female employees had been taking a break in the back room when a man, later identified as Fernandez, entered the salon, Gartner said.
One of the employees went to see who was there and, without saying a word, Fernandez allegedly stabbed her on the left forearm, Gartner said.
Fernandez then fled the shop and the other two women locked the door behind him and called police.
As police were investigating the incident, they received a call from Fernandez, who allegedly said he had just attempted to rob a business and had stabbed a woman.
He told police he was at a nearby apartment complex and surrendered when officers arrived, Gartner said.
Police also found the knife allegedly used in the assault, which investigators described as a large butcher knife.
Fernandez did not have any previous relationship with any of the women in the salon and the motive for the stabbing appears to have been robbery, although Fernandez never asked for any money or said anything to the victims, Gartner said.
The woman is expected to recover from her injuries.
