Police say a woman driving a car at high speed hit a utility pole, a tree and then flipped over onto the northbound lanes. She was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

"This is a major thoroughfare and there is generally a lot of traffic coming off the freeway so the fact that this car crossed into oncoming traffic and skidded across four lanes of northbound traffic without hitting someone is amazing. It is pure luck that this vehicle didn't contact an oncoming vehicle," said San Francisco Police Lt. Mike Caplan.

Police say witnesses tell them two vehicles were speeding. The second vehicle got away. It's not known if that vehicle hit the car before it crashed.
