Part of health care plan inspired by Safeway program

OAKLAND, CA

For the past five years, the grocery store chain has allowed workers to pay lower insurance premiums if they have a healthy weight, blood pressure and cholesterol level, and don't smoke.

The so-called "Safeway Amendment" in the health care bill allows other companies with self insurance programs to offer up to 50 percent premium cuts to healthy employees.
