Free backpack registration to start at Sacred Heart

SAN JOSE, CA

From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, families can sign up their children to receive a free backpack and school supplies as part of Sacred Heart's Pack-A-Back program.

Registration will be held at the agency's location at 1381 South First Street in San Jose.

San Jose City council members Madison Nguyen and Sam Liccardo will be on hand to help what they hope will be 1,500 children register for the free event.

"Education is the sole pathway out of poverty," Liccardo said. "We need to ensure even the smallest of obstacles are addressed for families with limited resources."

Together with the Santa Clara County Community Action Agency, Sacred Heart is looking for donations of backpacks, school supplies or donations to sponsor a child.

Backpacks, which will be filled with school supplies, will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 13 at Sacred Heart.

Donations, which should be sent to the organization by 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, can be made online at , or by mailing a check to Sacred Heart Community Service, 1381 South First Street, San Jose, Calif., 95110.
