Police responded to a call at 4:05 p.m. that a hand grenade had been discovered in a garage on the 400 block of Vallejo Street. They arrived on scene at about 4:40 p.m., witnesses said.
One officer said the hand grenade was World War II-era. The grenade was found while someone was cleaning a garage in the area, police said.
At least three apartment buildings on the block were evacuated and residents in three more were requested to move to the back of their buildings.
The grenade was then recovered and "rendered safe," police said.
Police reported no injuries and said everyone was able to return to their apartments at about 6 p.m.
