15 arrested in big oil protest

SAN FRANCISCO

Protesters marched from Justin Herman Plaza, to the chevron offices, to the BP office at Mission and New Montgomery streets. A group of demonstrators blocked that intersection and were eventually arrested.

Protesters are demanding a moratorium on new offshore drilling and more accountability for the impacts of climate change and the gulf oil spill.

"We know that 80 percent of the oil remains in the Gulf of Mexico. It's been mixed with dispersants, it's been mixed with chemicals, it's floating in the ocean," said protester Antionia Juhasz with Global Exchange. "You cannot go to the gulf in a boat and not encounter it. You cannot go to a beach and not encounter it."

BP responded that it supports "the right of people to protest peacefully and within the law." Chevron says it is "deeply committed to conducting business in a socially responsible and ethical manner."
