A tow truck driver was about to tow the pickup away when the owner told him there were explosives in the back. Police had the pick-up towed to the nearby City College Ocean Campus parking lot.
The bomb squad has roped off the area and is using a robot to investigate.
People with cars in the lot have been told it could be a few hours before they can get them.
