The shooting unfolded right in front of Maria Martinez's home on Bancroft Avenue near Durant in Oakland. It was around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night when San Leandro police officers began chasing a 1989 jaguar. Just after crossing into Oakland city limits, the Jaguar lost control and crashed into two parked vehicles.
Witnesses say they could hear officers screaming at the driver and then gunshots. They say police shot and killed the female driver and Tasered the car's male passenger.
"I'm scared. Oh my God my babies. I moved to this neighborhood because I thought it would be safer instead of further into Oakland. Recently, I've been hearing gunshots, car chases. This part of town is going downhill too," she said.
This is the third officer involved shooting in the Bay Area in the last 24 hours.
On Tuesday night, San Jose police responded to the home invasion robbery of a marijuana grow house on Locust Street. During the pursuit of at least four suspects, police shot one of them in the leg and wounded him.
Then in San Francisco's Portola neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, a woman called police to say she had been stabbed. When officers arrived on Bacon Street, they say a suspect approached them with a knife and they shot him. He later died at the hospital and the woman stabbed is said to be OK.
San Francisco's police chief will be holding a community meeting tonight regarding this latest shooting. As for the one involving San Leandro police, they may talk later this afternoon.
