Urns with human remains recovered after arrest

SANTA ROSA, Calif.

Detectives located a stolen 1989 Toyota Corolla in the 1000 block of Bush Street around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Mike Lazzarini said.

John Simpkins, 37, a local transient who was wanted on a felony warrant, was spotted retrieving items from the vehicle and entering a nearby house, Lazzarini said.

Simpkins was arrested when he ran out the back door of the house, Lazzarini said.

The stolen Toyota contained checks and identification cards that had been taken in vehicle burglaries in Santa Rosa over the past few weeks, Lazzarini said.

Detectives also recovered two urns containing human remains that were stolen during a vehicle burglary on March 13 in the 500 block of Summerfield Road, Lazzarini said. The urns were returned to family members.

Simpkins was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on the arrest warrant and detectives are investigating his link to the vehicle burglaries, forgeries and check cashing crimes, Lazzarini said.

Charges on those offenses are pending, Lazzarini said.
