The centuries-old tree stands in the way of a project to upgrade the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct in North Fair Oaks.
The neighbors have agreed to create a park around the tree.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission will pay more to dig beneath the tree's roots as an alternative to removing it. The PUC still needs to formally sign off on the deal.
