After serving as interim chief, Meyer will permanently take on the position with an annual salary of $165,600, Vallejo City Manager Phil Batchelor said.
Meyer has been in the fire service for more than 20 years. He started as a volunteer firefighter in Stockton before moving to Sunnyvale where he served as a public safety officer.
He then transited to Vallejo where he has held various positions within the fire department including firefighter, captain and battalion chief, according to Batchelor.
Batchelor said in a statement Meyer "has exceptional interpersonal communication skills that have allowed him to improve communications within the Department and to represent the Fire Department and (Vallejo) in a positive, proactive manner."
