Pub, authorities donate food, toys to fire victims

SAN FRANCISCO

On Saturday, Lefty O'Doul's restaurant and pub donated food and gathered toys and presents for the victims of the five-alarm Alamo Square fire. The fire left 40 people homeless and without gifts.

"The police department is giving over 2,500 toys that we've gathered...to the Pierce Street fire victims," said Sandra Rapicavoli with the San Francisco Fire Toy Program. "They're also giving food as well to take care of the victims that are displaced."

The fire ignited in the bottom of a trash can chute in an alleyway. Officials say the flames burned undetected for a significant amount of time before firefighters arrived.
