Teams of watchers started at dawn and will go until dusk peering through binoculars to count bird species that spend their winters in San Francisco. The census-like survey marks the 29th annual Christmas bird count for the Golden Gate Audubon Society.
Last year, observers counted 177 different species and more than 57,000 individual birds.
