Sequoia High School in Redwood City says the sophomore copied a classmate's homework in an honors English class and that violated an honesty pledge he and his mother both signed.
The parents admit to the plagiarism, but argue the punishment was not clearly spelled out and is too severe and could hurt his chances for college.
