This is the Asian Art Museum's first full scale exhibit of contemporary art where traditional pieces from its collection are matched with new art.
"We wanted to show that some of the ideas artists grappled with 200 years ago are still very much on the minds of artists living and working today," assistant curator Allison Harding said.
There are 31 artists from 15 nations, each with their own culture, yet they share some common thinking.
"Phantoms of Asia" will be up until early September.
