Bar pilot rates won't be changing

SAN FRANCISCO

Assm. Sandre Swanson, D-Oakland, is delaying his effort to establish new rates for the so-called bar pilots.

Swanson's bill called for charging shipping companies 50 percent more for ships the bar pilots believed needed two pilots to ensure safety. Shippers didn't want to pay it, claiming the pilots are already paid well, earning $450,000 a year.

Shippers credit an ABC7 News I-Team report for changing attitudes about the rate change.
