Oakland-based Youth Radio in DC to receive prestigious award

OAKLAND, Calif.

Youth Radio will receive the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

The non-profit teaches more than 400 underserved young adults each year, with over 70 percent of the graduates going on to college.

"We bascially teach youth media skills, and we teach youth how to produce video, music production and broadcast journalism," said Youth Radio producer Brandon McFarland. "And through those skills, we put young people on a career path and path to success."

The award ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. PST. It will be streamed live on the White House's website at www.whitehouse.gov/live.
