The idea is to extend BART beyond Richmond, where it currently stops. District 7 Director Zakhary Mallett wants to extend BART to Hercules with stops in San Pablo and Pinole. He tells the Contra Costa County Times that running the line along I-80 makes sense because suburban commuter growth develops along freeways.
Mallett is not sure how much the extension would cost, but believes if there is a political will, there is a way.
A competing idea would extend BART northward from the current Richmond BART station along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor on the San Pablo Bay Shore.
