According to the San Francisco Chronicle, smartphone robberies were the major contributor to a 35 percent increase in pedestrian robberies during the first six months of the year.
Police say they're hoping to crack down on the property theft by deploying more officers on bikes downtown and along Telegraph Avenue.
They're also sending more officers to neighborhoods with high burglary rates.
