Contra Costa County hazardous materials officials say about 50 needles spilled onto San Pablo Dam Road, off Appian Way in El Sobrante. The CHP initially estimated it was about 1,000 needles. The road was shut for several hours while crews cleaned up the needles and an unknown liquid. The spill happened sometime before 7 a.m., but it's still unknown where the needles came from.
