It happened in the area of Kiely Boulevard and Taft Avenue around 2:30 a.m.
Residents say they heard tires screeching shortly before a car slammed in between the two homes. The accident broke a gas line at one of the homes.
PG&E shut off the gas, but residents from both houses were evacuated as a precaution.
There is no word yet on what caused the accident.
