Report: BART's new trains failed key safety inspection

It looks like you'll have to wait longer for BART's newest cars after they failed a key safety inspection. They were supposed to roll out around Thanksgiving.

According to our media partner the Mercury News, BART's new train cars failed a safety inspection on Friday.

The goal was to have passengers riding the "fleet of the future" by Thanksgiving. But in a letter from the California Public Utilities Commission, obtained by the Bay Area News Group, BART will not be able to use the new cars until it corrects the problem.

Inspectors reported the 10 car train failed to recognize all but three of the cars on the train. The train operator was also unable to open the doors at the platforms. The CPUC is asking BART for a written explanation about the cause of the failure and how it can be corrected. Once that happens, BART will have to run another test for the state regulators.

BART officials have said they still hope to replace the entire fleet by 2021.
