Bay Bridge reopens after officer-involved shooting investigation

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The eastbound lanes of the Bay Bridge are back open Sunday after being closed for about five hours for an officer involved shooting.

CHP says it began around 3:45 a.m. when officers were investigating an eastbound crash about a mile from the toll plaza. Officers say a red Cadillac tried getting around the traffic back-up by using the right emergency lane - the same lane where officers were standing.

"They were issued multiple commands for the car to stop, it kept coming and drove at one of the officers who discharged several rounds at the vehicle striking the driver, the vehicle was brought to a stop," said Officer Vu Williams of the California Highway Patrol.

The male driver was taken to a hospital where he is expected to survive. Two passengers in the Cadillac were not hurt, they were questioned by police.

The shooting investigation shut down the east bound Bay Bridge for five hours; traffic was detoured off the San Francisco skyway at Fourth Street.

Those who were stuck in the middle of it all took to social media with their frustrations. Many pictures on social media showed drivers walking around the Bay Bridge deck.

CHP eventually got many drivers turned around through Treasure Island. The backup continued through the mid-morning, all lanes were reopened about 9:30 a.m.
