SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- The word lucky might not come to mind when you're filling up your gas tank, but that's just the idea behind a new 'play at the pump' program California lottery officials are looking over.

Under the proposed plan, drivers could buy lottery tickets while they pump gas. Lottery officials say tickets would be available at about 100 to 150 gas stations. If approved by the commission, the program could launch in August.

"Statistics show that 72 or 73 percent of people just go out and pump gas, they don't walk into a retail store; so this is another way to capture that business," said Cal Lottery spokesman Russ Lopez.

"I don't care as long as I win. If I win -- free gas on me if I win the lotto everybody," said gas station customer Brandon Dossman.

Only Quick Pick tickets would be sold for the Mega Millions, Powerball and Super Lotto Plus games. Drivers could only buy a limited number and would have to buy gas.
