Gas leak in Campbell prompts evacuations

CAMPBELL, Calif. (KGO) -- A gas leak in Campbell forced the evacuation of more than 80 homes. The leak has been capped, but residents are still waiting for the all clear.

A construction crew caused the leak at Hacienda Ave. and Capri Drive on Monday morning. Evacuees were sent about five minutes away to the Campbell Community Center on Campbell Ave.

It all started around 8:45 a.m. when a construction crew hit a four inch gas main.

Santa Clara County firefighters took over the scene, PG&E was called, and Campbell police blocked roads and started going door-to-door to homes in a three block area.

A shelter-in-place order was given to those within a quarter mile radius of the leak. Residents were notified by the city's reverse 911 system.

The leak was capped at about 10:29 a.m. and the evacuation order and shelter-in-place orders were lifted about 15 minutes later.

Firefighters say it's a good thing it happened during this time of day since most people were at work.

As far as the Campbell Community Center, they said very people showed up and needed to use the shelter.

Crews still need to move some equipment and work around the scene so the traffic on Hacienda Ave. will be blocked for a little while longer.
