9-year-old recovering from double lung transplant at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) -- A family is making big plans for when a little boy returns home after having a double lung transplant. His big sister had the same life-saving surgery three years ago.

Doris and David Diaz met with one of their doctors at Stanford on Wednesday. Both siblings needed lung transplants because of cystic fibrosis.

Eleven-year-old Doris had her surgery in 2014 and 9-year-old David continues to recover after receiving his new lungs three months ago.

When asked how he feels today, David responded, "Much more better than I used to."

"Thank you to the doctors and for everyone that has helped us get through this," Doris said.

"They have done remarkable well, both with their transplants," their doctor said.

Surgeons at Stanford say pediatric lung transplants are very rare. Less than 50 were performed worldwide last year.
