A burglary suspect is in serious condition after police arrested him on suspicion of burglary Wednesday morning and discovered he had been shot in the head.
At 11:15 a.m., police responded to a call reporting a burglary at a home on Cutting Boulevard just east of Arlington Boulevard, according to police.
An 85-year-old man told police he was home alone when he spotted suspicious people in his backyard. Fearing for his safety, the resident armed himself, police said.
Two burglars were able to enter the house by breaking a back door. The resident thought his life was in danger and shot at the suspects, according to police.
The suspects then fled on foot and left in a car, police said.
The resident then called police and waited with neighbors as police arrived.
While police responded to the call, officers located one of the suspects on Key Boulevard near the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station. The suspect attempted to run from officers, police said.
Officers caught up with the suspect and detained him. He has been identified as Oakland resident Shawn Mulberry, 34, according to police.
Officers arrested Mulberry and discovered he had been shot in the head. Officers kept Mulberry alert while medical personnel responded to the scene, police said.
An ambulance transported Mulberry to a hospital for treatment.
Police are seeking additional suspects connected to the alleged burglary. Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white or gray sedan, according to police.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact El Cerrito police at (510) 215-4400.
