Former San Francisco 49ers, Giants players honored with street names at new Candlestick Park development

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Former 49ers and Giants players were honored Sunday by having streets named after them on the new development site of the old Candlestick Park.

Former 49er great Jerry Rice held up a new street sign baring his name. He and others will be immortalized in a new neighborhood where the old Candlestick Park once stood. "I never thought I'd have a street named after me. It's a great recognition, and I feel very fortunate," Rice said.

Legends from the 49ers and Giants are getting the honor, along with the owners who made it happen. "Everybody that put on a San Francisco Giants uniform made this all possible and made it possible for the city," Former 49ers owner Eddie Debartolo, Jr. said.

The late coach Bill Walsh was also honored.

Former quarter back Joe Montana wanted his street sign to be changed. "I would like to share this with a very special person, and I would like to change this to Montana Clark Drive," former 49ers quarter back Joe Montana said.

Dwight Clark was alongside Montana after Clark's recent announcement that he has ALS.

Clark will be honored with a mural depicting the famous catch he caught from Montana to win the NFC championship game against the Cowboys in 1982. "When I tell that story, Joe says 'maybe it should be called the throw"' Clark said.

The new Candlestick development will encompass 7,000 new homes, retail shops and restaurants.

This new neighborhood will soon to channel the spirit of Bay Area sports legends.
