Sunday storms cause traffic problems around Bay Area

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KGO) -- Sunday was a break from Saturday's punishing storm, but the evening's downpour created traffic hazards around the Bay Area.

The steady rains caused quite a few spots where water pooled, causing drivers to slow to a crawl.

Highway 92 is closed in both directions just east of Half Moon Bay due to a chain of five large trees that fell and completely blocked the roadway. It is unknown as to when the roadway will be reopened.

Drenched freeways and roads caused one of the biggest safety issues.

"From here to Cloverdale, it gets hydroplaning and you're right, people are crazy. They don't slow down, so that's why I got the big truck out and not the little car or the little truck," said Maureen O'Neill, who lives in Cloverdale.

There was one spin out on Highway 101 near Cotati in which a car smashed into the hillside. Rain slicked streets also posed a problem for Destiny Jump, who rode her bicycled to work on Sunday.

"You just have to be careful about sliding. You know, you don't want to end up in the road, and it getting pretty scary with all the cars out there today," said Jump.

In Healdsburg, the saturated ground along Kinley Drive caused the roots to buckle on this tree, it so it fell over. A fire department team quickly cut it apart and cleared the roadway.

The showers came in waves, but didn't pack the same winds as Saturday's storm.

Many say they know it will take a lot of rain to end California's drought, so they're happy with the return of umbrella weather.
