SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- It's gotten a lot safer to ride Muni in San Francisco. The transit system says cellphone thefts dropped 77 percent since May of last year.

City officials credit a safety campaign that launched November 2013. It put more police officers on patrol inside Muni buses. Riders were also urged to be more aware of their surroundings.

Overall, crime on Muni is down by a third in the last year.

Despite the drop, riders are still urged to avoid using their smartphone on the bus.
