Santa Clara County court clerks returning to work after ratifying contract

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Santa Clara County court clerks will return to work tomorrow after voting overwhelmingly today to ratify a contract over better wages.

The agreement ends an eight-day strike that significantly cut back court services.

"Today, our members spoke loud and clear that this contract will begin to help them afford to live and work in the most expensive areas in the country. With ratification of this contract, the reconciliation process with the court administration must begin and we are committed to doing our part to make that occur," said Ingrid Stewart, President of the Superior Court Professional Employees Association.

Officials said 258 members voted this morning at the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff.

In June, the court gave the union its "last, best and final" offer that gave workers a 4.5 percent net increase, but no raise in the second year.

The union's members had gone without a pay increase for eight years and were uncertain of when they'd receive another raise if they moved forward with the court's proposal, according to Stewart.

The details of the agreement reached today have not been released at this time.
