The US Department of Transportation has released the long-awaited Federal Automated Vehicles Policy.

It allows automakers to self-certify the safety of autonomous vehicles while following a 15-point government blueprint.

The 15 points include how cars should react if their technology fails and how to protect passengers in crashes.

Consumer Reports, which independently evaluates automated systems says the guidelines aren't strong enough.
