Lengthy rap sheet for suspect in Carlesha Freeland-Gaither's abduction

GERMANTOWN, Pa. -- Delvin Barnes, the suspect in the abduction of Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, is the son of a preacher but has a rap sheet that rivals some career criminals.

Action News spoke with the suspect's uncle who says he's not surprised about his nephew's arrest.

"I feel bad for my brother and his wife because they don't deserve this," said Lamar Barnes.

Barnes says he doesn't know if the latest accusations against his nephew Delvin are true but he knows he has made bad choices in life.

"From my experience and knowledge of him, he has a thing about women and females," said Barnes' uncle.

According to the Pennsylvania State Board of Probation and Parole, the now 37-year-old has three prison sentences under his belt.

Action News obtained video of him in 2005. Soon after he served his most recent sentence, completing the maximum of eight years for aggravated assault.

He was released in November of 2013.

On Wednesday Delvin was being held on a warrant out of Virginia for attempted capital murder, abduction, forcible rape, and other charges.

According to ABC News, a woman says she was abducted off of a Richmond street and missing for two days. That victim told police she didn't know Barnes.

Barnes' uncle says he last saw his nephew in Virginia a few months ago and that while they have family here, he did not see him in Philadelphia in recent weeks.

"It's hard for me to accept the viciousness of it, I'm not necessarily surprised," he said.

Meanwhile ABC News is also reporting that Barnes showed the victim in the Virginia incident photos of other women he claimed to have abducted.

Barnes, whose parents still live in Virginia, is also facing federal charges for Freeland-Gaither's kidnapping.
