The oldest son of Officer Gus Vegas, Joe Vegas, spoke at his father's public memorial service on Friday, February 19, 2016.

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- The oldest son of Officer Gus Vegas, Joe Vegas, spoke at his father's public memorial service on Friday, February 19, 2016.

He started with, "I'm his oldest son. When I was born, I was born before my mom and dad got married. So I don't know if it was custom, but I didn't get his last name. And it's kind of always been like that. He never made me change it, never pressured me to change it. When I got older, I think it was his last birthday, I legally changed it to Vegas and I surprised him on his birthday. So my name is Joe Vegas, Officer Vegas was my father. I can't explain to you right now how proud I am to say that."
