SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- The Santa Clara City Council will hold an emergency meeting Wednesday night to appoint a new mayor.

According to ABC7 News' media partner, the San Jose Mercury News, the council unanimously voted to choose a successor to finish the term of Jamie Matthews.

It was a shock when he resigned last week with two years still remaining on his term.

Councilwoman Lisa Gillmor is rumored to be the frontrunner to replace him.

The city council will meet at 7:30 p.m.
