SAN JOSE (KGO) -- Police said speed and alcohol played a role in a Sunday crash involving eight vehicles that sent several people to the hospital in San Jose.
The San Jose Police Department responded at 9:28 p.m. to Ocala Avenue near Capitol Expressway after an officer saw a black Mercedes traveling down the road at a high rate of speed.
Police said the Mercedes failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection, broad siding another vehicle.
The Mercedes rolled several times and crashed into other cars.
Police said the driver of the vehicle tried to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later.
Police said three people were trapped in the vehicle when it caught fire.
Responding emergency crews were able to put out the fire and extract the passengers.
Police said the driver and three passengers were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and six other people were transported to the hospital with various injuries.
