100 police officers, FBI conduct major gang sweep in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- There was a major gang sweep in Oakland Friday morning. A hundred officers, including Oakland police and the FBI, moved in on a number of locations around the city.

They arrested suspected gang members and confiscated guns, drugs and cash.

The sweep focused on the Nortenos and the Border Brothers gangs. Police and FBI seized weapons, drugs and arrested several known gang members.

They found a large marijuana grow with more than 100 plants. Officers also confiscated 3 oz. of cocaine and some heroine.

The raid is part of Oakland's Operation Ceasefire, where police give gang members an opportunity to make a change, asking them to use resources and to stop committing crimes.

They served search warrants at known gang members' homes who did not make those changes.

"We took a proactive measure to, number one, reach out to them and let them know that we care about them, did not want to see them dead or in jail. And if they did not stop the violence that we were going to follow up on our promise to hold them accountable. Today was the day that we held them accountable," OPD Captain Ersie Joyner said.

Fifteen people were detained. Police are questioning some of them about a murder that happened in Oakland a few weeks ago.

In September, officers found a man shot to death near Skyline Boulevard and Joaquin Miller Road. Police are now saying they think that may have been a retaliation killing.

More than 100 officers from several different agencies participated in Friday morning's raid.
