Stolen car involved in crash that killed 89-year-old Oakland man

OAKLAND, Calif. -- A stolen car was involved in a collision in East Oakland on Sunday afternoon that killed an 89-year-old man, police said Monday.

At about 3 p.m. on Sunday, the stolen car, a maroon Ford Edge that was traveling north on 98th Avenue, broad-sided a tan Honda minivan that was traveling south on 98th Avenue and making a left turn onto E Street, according to police.

The Honda minivan then struck a gray Toyota Camry that was stopped for a traffic signal on E Street, police said.

Paramedics who responded to the collision found the 89-year-old man, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau today as Carl Martin of Oakland, dead in the minivan's passenger area, police said.

Three other passengers in the Honda and the Ford Edge suffered minor injuries, police said.

Officers discovered that the Ford Edge was reported as a stolen vehicle and took its driver into custody at the scene, according to police.

It doesn't appear that alcohol was a factor in the collision, police said.
