SAYREVILLE, New Jersey -- An off-duty police officer was shot and killed Monday morning outside a movie theater in Sayreville, New Jersey, the Middlesex Prosecutor's Office said.
The prosecutor said police received a call at about 7:15 a.m. that there was a body at the theater. The officer was found shot in the parking lot of the old Amboy Cinemas.
There is no word yet on the circumstances that led to the shooting. The prosecutor would not release any other details of the shooting, other than to say it was a male officer with the Sayreville Police Department who suffered gunshot wounds and he was off-duty at the time.

The officer was a 9-year veteran and worked in an undercover capacity.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement:
"We have been alerted to a report of a body located near the former movie theater in Sayreville. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating with the cooperation of the Sayreville Police Department. There will be no further comment at this time."
