WASHINGTON (KGO) -- The Supreme Court will not issue a long-awaited ruling today on same-sex marriage.

That means the justices could decide as early as tomorrow whether bans in four states violate the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians. Many court watchers expect the justices to rule against the states.

The court could allow states to maintain the bans, but require them to recognize valid same-sex marriages performed in other states.
