Trump focused on solidifying support at GOP convention in Burlingame

BURLINGAME, Calif. (KGO) -- Despite the chaos outside the GOP convention in Burlingame on Friday, the scene inside the Hyatt was relatively calm as Trump tried to solidify his support among California Republicans.

Many felt his speech inside the Hyatt fell short, at least if he was trying to unify Republicans behind him.

After making a most unusual entrance into the Burlingame Hyatt, Trump used it as his opening line.

"Then we went under and through a fence. Oh boy, felt like I was crossing the border actually," Trump said.

Trump was speaking to a room filled mostly with supporters, who paid $100 a plate to be here.

In some cases, they were confronted with angry protesters on the way in. "They cussed me out, they were coming up against me, up in my face and I told them, that's a problem. We're tired to supporting people like you," Trump supporter Luisa Aranda said.

Though Trump alluded to unifying the party throughout his 25-minute address, he also peppered it with his familiar insults of rivals - past and present.

"I think he made the case for why he can't unify the party. He's still obsessing and insulting Jeb Bush, who's been out of the race for a month and a half," Cruz Campaign's Mike Shroeder said.

San Francisco's Chet McGensy believes Trump can ultimately unify both his party and the country. "I think that he has to set the standard, set the tone. I think that you heard that today in terms of trying to unify. But again you have to have everyone else willing to come around the table," he said.

"I know they're waiting, they're going to take me under a fence, through a field," Trump said.

Trump did call for California Republicans to vote for him but said little else about the state's upcoming primary - one that could finally matter for the first time in decades.
