RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- Tragedy struck the Richmond Police Department's K-9 Unit on Tuesday morning after an officer was forced to shoot a police dog.
It happened about 6:45 a.m. in the parking lot behind the police station on Regatta Blvd.
Officials say an officer went out there and was attacked by the dog. Details have not been released as to how the dog attacked him.
The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and is said to be in good condition.
Police say the dog survived the gunshot and was taken to a veterinarian with critical injuries.
The Richmond Police Department is the second oldest K-9 unit in the state. They're an award-winning unit.
Officials told ABC7 News that they are very concerned and devastated about what happened.
