Standoff ends peacefully in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley

SAN FRANCISCO -- Police have safely taken a man into custody after he was barricaded inside a home in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood with his two children overnight, a police spokeswoman said this morning.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, had been holed up in a home in the 100 block of Ward Street after a domestic violence incident occurred in the Excelsior District between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday, San Francisco police Sgt. Danielle Newman said.

That incident occurred in the 400 block of London Street and shots were fired, according to Newman.

He then fled to the home on Ward Street and refused to come out until about 7:20 a.m. when he surrendered to authorities, Newman said.

He was in the home with his 11- and 14-year-old children, who were found safe after the man was taken into custody, Newman said. The man's name was not yet being released, she said.

During the incident, nearby residents were ordered to shelter in place, according to Newman.

The American Red Cross was called to assist residents who were unable to return to their homes overnight and into the morning, she said.
