SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The family of a critically burned San Jose State University football player is thanking everyone for their well-wishes.

Jared Leaf, who had been listed as a starting linebacker for the Spartans, suffered second degree burns after trying to escape a fire at his apartment near campus last week. His family says he's recovering at Santa Clara Valley Medical Burn Center.

San Jose State is still going through the process of getting NCAA approval to help with Leaf's medical bills.

In a statement, Leaf's family expressed appreciation for the hospital staff, San Jose State's coaches, players and athletic department officials, as well as all others who have provided their support and help.

The family says, "Jared has a long road ahead of him, but we are confident he will recover" with the continued support from all.
