KublaCon attendees challenged by San Mateo Bridge closure
The San Mateo Bridge closure over the Memorial Day weekend has created a challenge for 3,000 attendees of a board game convention.

BURLINGAME, Calif. (KGO) -- Caltrans has closed the San Mateo Bridge over the Memorial Day weekend for repairs and resurfacing. Caltrans is predicting this closure will not create the same traffic mess as the last time the bridge was closed.

Still, the bridge closure is making it difficult for attendees of the KublaCon board game convention to maneuver around the Bay Area. It is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Burlingame and many would have used the San Mateo Bridge to get there. There are 3,000 people planning to attend the event.

This will be the last closure for the resurfacing of the bridge.

Caltrans is recommending drivers take the Dumbarton Bridge or Highway 237 in the South Bay as other alternatives.

"The Bay Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge were heavily used, but some southern routes through San Jose and Mountain View were free flowing. So there's more capacity down there," explained Bob Haus with Caltrans.

Finally, the San Francisco Giants are not playing at home this weekend, which may mean fewer drivers will be out on the roads.

The bridge is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.
