Skateboarder struck by suspected DUI driver near Ocean Beach
SAN FRANCISCO -- A skateboarder suffered life-threatening injuries when a car near San Francisco's Ocean Beach struck him on Thursday night, police said.
The collision was reported at about 9 p.m. at Great Highway near John F. Kennedy Drive, according to San Francisco police Officer Gordon Shyy.
The skateboarder, described as a man in his 50s, left the parking lot of the Beach Chalet Restaurant and Brewery and began crossing Great Highway outside of a crosswalk, Shyy said.
A white sedan traveling northbound on Great Highway struck him in the far left lane, according to Shyy.
He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, Shyy said.
The driver of the car, identified as 50-year-old Krista Cummings, stopped and remained at the scene.
Officers determined Cummings to be under the influence of a controlled substance and arrested her for misdemeanor DUI, according to Shyy.
A manager at the Beach Chalet Restaurant and Brewery said that despite there being well-lit crosswalks between Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach, he frequently still sees people cross Great Highway outside the designated crosswalks.
He said he wasn't surprised to hear that someone had been hit.
